THE GREEN REPORT

How Eco-Friendly is Moore's Administration in the First TEN Months?

Greetings, fellow Earth enthusiasts! As the Green Ambassador, I am deeply committed to environmental justice, preserving our natural resources, and working alongside various environmental groups to make a positive impact. Today, let's delve into the environmental progress made by Maryland’s Moore/Miller Administration during their first ten months in office, with a focus on their key commitments and our recommendations.

Environmental Commitments and Progress

Chief Sustainability Officer: Governor Moore pledged to appoint a Chief Sustainability, Mitigation, and Resilience Officer, a crucial role for our state's environmental future. While the appointment is expected in mid-summer, I and the League of Conversation Voters (MDLCV) strongly recommend that this position be at the highest level, reporting directly to the Governor. This ensures our sustainability efforts receive the attention they deserve.

Transition to 100% Clean Electricity: Governor Moore has already taken significant steps towards cleaner energy. However, our goal of achieving 100% clean electricity by 2035 requires even more commitment. Let's keep pushing for legislative support and stronger regulation to ensure we reach this ambitious target.

Climate Change Staffing: Progress in hiring staff for implementing the Climate Solutions Now Act is encouraging. To make this initiative a success, we need to actively support legislation and funding opportunities. It's vital that we allocate resources to fulfill all 16 requested positions.

Formal Partnerships for Greenhouse Gas Reduction: The Governor's efforts to establish partnerships with Maryland institutions are commendable. These partnerships can play a vital role in developing a skilled clean energy workforce. Let's keep expanding these collaborations and prioritize workforce development.

Maximizing Funding Sources: The creation of a "Federal Investment Team" is a step in the right direction. However, we must be more aggressive in accessing federal funds. Outreach to residents for funding sources, like tax credits for rooftop solar or EV chargers, should be a priority. Transparency regarding funding efforts is also essential.

Environmental Justice: Governor Moore's commitment to environmental justice is commendable. To continue this important work, the state must develop environmental justice plans and policies to address cumulative impacts. Let's make sure no community is left behind.

Reducing Transportation Emissions: Governor Moore's clean transportation initiatives are vital. MDLCV recommends additional funding for electric vehicles and further improvement of public transportation services. Talk to your state senators to aim for a transportation system that's eco-friendly and accessible for everyone.

Chesapeake Bay Protection: Protecting the Chesapeake Bay is crucial. Allocating resources for environmental enforcement and water quality improvement is a step in the right direction. Targeting funding to high-impact areas and promoting sustainable agricultural practices are key for the Bay's health.

Cabinet Appointments

I want to acknowledge the Governor's cabinet appointments, particularly those who are committed to transparency, equity, and environmental advancement. My office and the citizens of Maryland eagerly await the appointment of a Chief Sustainability Officer, who will play a pivotal role in our journey towards a greener Maryland.

Looking Forward

In these first ten months, the Moore/Miller Administration has shown promise in their commitment to environmental progress and justice. However, we have a long road ahead. To secure a greener future for Maryland, we must take a holistic approach, develop comprehensive investment strategies, and create a clear path towards achieving 100% clean energy by 2035.

As we look ahead, let's remember that the challenges posed by climate change are significant. But with courageous leadership and effective policies, we can make Maryland a shining example of what's possible when we work together for a cleaner, greener future. Maryland LCV and I are here to support these efforts and collaborate on bold initiatives that benefit all Marylanders.

Together, we can create a brighter, more sustainable future for our beloved Maryland. Let's keep the momentum going!

With green hope and determination,

Cathy Allen -The Green Ambassador
